Fluctuations

Jan 14th 2010

Fluctuations is an album composed entirely of improvised music by Aaron Finbloom and Evan Freeman.  The entire album was recorded in about 1 week span.  Each song is merely an edited segment of a larger multi-houred improvisational session.  The first session (songs 1-2) was in the beginning of the week and was accompanied by 2-3 other friends.  The second session (songs 3-9) was in the middle of the week and was accompanied by a musician and friend Abigail Weg.  The third session (songs 10-13) was with just Evan and myself and occurred towards the end of the week.

So the album works on multiple levels…

First, the album highlights the communicative connections and disconnects of improvised music as each song (or series of songs) fluctuations in and out of this connectedness. Second, the album contains songs that stand alone as interesting musical entities. Third, the album (through its chronological arrangement) shows how music changes as two people get to know each other better (both as persons and musicians). Forth, the album (by moving from 5 musicians, to 3, to 2) shows how different amounts of musicians in a single setting might alter the music’s mood or shape.
